Tucked inside a restored wind-tower house in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding has been a window into Emirati life since 1998. Known simply as SMCCU, this Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid cultural centre welcomes residents and tourists under the motto “Open Doors. Open Minds.” Guests can ask Emirati hosts anything about local customs, traditions and faith, which also makes it a welcoming Islamic cultural centre for first-time visitors to the city. The SMCCU cultural centre runs a busy programme of experiences. These include traditional Emirati meals, Arabic lessons, Jumeirah Mosque visits and SMCCU heritage tours through the lanes of Old Dubai, which end with Arabic coffee, tea and dates. Seasonal events add even more reasons to visit.
